See the Moving Tides Procession 2012 on 9th September as part of the London 2012 closing celebrations. This fantastic, inventive, joyous carnival procession is made and presented by children and young people from Weymouth and Portland. It should create the perfect carnival atmosphere for this historic occasion.
The overall theme is ‘Spirit of The Sea’ in keeping with Weymouth and Portland’s annual maritime festival. As 2012 is a special year and we have international visitors for the sailing events, this year’s theme is also ‘Oceans Of The World’. You'll delight in aqueous angelfish, marvel at Jurassic creatures, dance with yellow seagulls, sway to the beat of the drum and chuckle at costumes based on crabs and squids.
The procession was invented in 2008 by the Arts Development Officer to try to keep alive Weymouth and Portland's rich tradition of Summer Carnival in the minds of the next generation. The project gives local pupils the opportunity to work across design, visual art, music and dance and this year has brought students from Arts University College Bournemouth to local schools.
The Moving Tides Procession is funded by: The Arts Council of England South West, Awards For All, RELAYS and Dorset County Council.
